You know that you love your lawn. But have you ever given much thought to the benefits of a healthy lawn? While the aesthetics are certainly a big part of that (that is, you just love how it looks), there’s actually so much more to it than that.
In fact, there are many benefits of a healthy lawn that personally impact you—but also the environment! With a healthy and thriving lawn, you are doing your part to help the planet.
Let’s talk a little bit more about this important topic as we often find that homeowners don’t always realize the power of their lawn! In fact, in more recent years, there has been some talk about “getting rid of lawns” and about their negative effect on the environment. But we want you to have all the facts.
We’ve broken down this article by the environmental benefits of a healthy lawn and also the lifestyle benefits of a healthy lawn. We know that both are important to you so we want to address each.
Have you been wondering: Do lawns help the environment?
You might be surprised to hear that yes, a healthy lawn can be very good for the environment. People are sometimes shocked by this because they have heard news to the contrary. But quite a bit of research points to the fact that there are environmental benefits of a healthy lawn.
In fact, this is a topic that the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) has been tackling. They recently shared some research from sources like The Lawn Institute that we want to share with you.
One huge way that lawns help the environment is by creating oxygen. Just like any other plant, lawns sequester carbon and produce oxygen. While not always thought of this way, lawns are actually a collection of thousands of oxygen-making plants, which makes them a benefit to the environment.
Another environmental benefit of a healthy lawn is its ability to act as a trap for particles like dust and dirt that would otherwise end up in the air. Some estimates show that lawns might capture as much as 12 million tons of dust and dirt annually!
In addition to capturing particles that are released into the air, a thick and healthy lawn can also capture pollutants from stormwater runoff and prevent them from ending up in the sewer system. A lawn with many miles of fibrous roots can also help to hold soil in place and prevent erosion.
Lawns are also much cooler than hardscaping. In fact, some estimates show that on a hot summer day, lawns are as much as 30 degrees cooler than blacktop.
Now that you have a better understanding of some of the environmental benefits of a healthy lawn, let’s look at some ways in which your lawn also benefits you, personally. Our guess is that you already knew many of these!
Think about all of the great memories that you have spending time in your yard with your friends and family. Your lawn is integral to those experiences. Whether it is having a game of catch with your kids, running around barefoot, letting your dog play outside, or even having a picnic, a healthy lawn is such an important part of having an enjoyable time outdoors.
Life can be stressful! Work can be hard, schedules can be busy, and sometimes we might feel like we spend a lot of time running around. But a lawn can become a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of life and just make great memories or find some peace of quiet.
But you want to keep your lawn looking its best so that you can enjoy time outside rather than being stressed out by how your lawn looks.
Of course, it’s not just you that loves a great lawn! One of the lifestyle benefits of a healthy lawn is that it will increase the value of your home. A thick, thriving lawn looks great (and it makes your home look great, too).
In many ways, it becomes an extension of your home, giving you room to get outside and maximize the space that you have. Whether you enjoy reading a book in a hammock or setting up some chairs on the lawn, you want that lush space to be able to do activities outside (and future home buyers will feel the same way).
Of course, that aesthetic value that we know likely came to mind first is certainly also one of the lifestyle benefits of a healthy lawn.
You want to be proud when you pull up to your house or when you view your lawn from inside. It feels good to have the best-looking lawn in your neighborhood!
On the flip side of that, you don’t want to be in a house with a lawn that is a mess with bare spots or insect damage. That’s why you want to invest in a lawn care program that will keep your turf looking amazing.
Perhaps these 8 benefits of a healthy lawn are some that you never thought of before. We know that homeowners are sometimes made to feel guilty for wanting a thick and thriving lawn because they hear misconceptions about lawns being really bad for the environment.
Hopefully, some of the environmental benefits of a healthy lawn that we provided helped you to realize that wanting a thriving lawn is nothing to be ashamed of!
Of course, the lifestyle benefits are important, too. Your healthy lawn means you can truly enjoy your home and lifestyle more fully!
But when it comes to gaining these benefits, the key is to truly achieve a healthy lawn.
That’s not something that just happens. It comes with a thorough lawn care program that contains everything a lawn will need to thrive. While it’s lawn care that sometimes gets a bad rap when lawn care services are performed conscientiously by well-trained professionals, you are able to reap the benefits without the downsides.
Master Lawn is careful about making responsible choices when it comes to our lawn care practices. That includes making thoughtful product selections and choosing products that will have a minimal environmental impact. It also means using “best practices,” like spot-treating weeds or cleaning up after we are finished with a job.
While we know that companies that rush through the work or use bad habits can give the industry as a whole a bad name, we want homeowners to know that there are plenty of responsible lawn care companies out there that care about the environment, too.
At the end of the day, we want you to be able to reap all of the benefits of a healthy lawn (whether personal or environmental).
